Hello Richard, I wonder if courses like Assimil or Tell Me More are any use for learning French ? What do you think of immersion courses like Berlitz or Alliance Francaise ? Is it really possible to reach fluency without a tutor ? thanks, Keith

    • I have never used Berlitz or similar as a student, going to the classes. Berlitz in particular seemed very expensive to me when I went to find out about their courses. For the money I would hope that people would learn the language well. Paying that much out would certianly be a motivator! 😉

In all seriousness though, I have done courses in Czech Republic and Netherlands for a lot less and got plenty out of them. They were at local colleges, universities or language schools. I am a big fan of local resources for learning languages. Assimil has some good courses in some langauges, but there are other languages they teach, whcih I am not fond of at all. The same goes for any of the big names on the market, like Colloquial, TeachYourself etc. etc. Perhaps I should write something more detailed about sourcing materials in a language… 🙂
